In the Add-Ins available box, select the Solver Add-In check box, and then click OK. (In Edit mode your workbook is auto-saved, but only at intervals of about 30 seconds. After you load the Solver Add-in, the Solver command is available in the Analysis group on the Data tab. Alternatively, click on the Excel Add-ins on the Developer ribbon to get the Add-ins dialog box. Make sure the Solver Add-in option is selected. Next, go to your web browsers 'Downloaded' folder and copy the downloaded SOLVER.XLAM file. Select file version compatible with your operating system and click the 'Download' button.

Select Add-ins and click on the Go button next to Excel Add-ins. The last solution is to manually download and replace SOLVER.XLAM file in appropriate folder on the disk. Before you click the Solve button, ensure that your workbook has been saved using File Save As. Select the File on the Excel ribbon and then go down to Options. You can see a Solver model in read-only mode, but before you change options or selections, ensure that you are in Edit mode.To insert an add-in in Excel Online, you must be in Edit mode.

To solve larger models (up to hundreds of thousands or millions of decision variables), please contact Frontline Systems at or 77.For free use by everyone, problem size limits in this Solver add-in are the same as in the Excel Solver (200 decision variables and 100 constraints in addition to bounds on the variables). This server has a finite capacity, as currently provisioned (and paid for) by Frontline Systems. When you click the Solve button in the Add-on, your model is queued for solution by Frontline's backend Solver Server. There are no fixed limits on iterations or subproblems, but the backend server currently limits solving time to 30 seconds. To see examples, visit Many textbooks also include examples and discussions of Solver models - see Problem size limits in the Solver Add-on are the same as in the Excel Solver (200 decision variables and 100 constraints in addition to bounds on the variables). To learn more about optimization problems and what you can (and cannot) expect from solutions, visit You can use the Solver Add-on to find better ways to allocate scarce resources, maximize profits or minimize costs or risks, in a wide range of applications in finance and investment, marketing, manufacturing and production, distribution and logistics, purchasing, and human resources, as well as science and engineering. You can solve linear programming and mixed-integer programming problems with the Simplex LP Solver, nonlinear optimization problems with the GRG Nonlinear Solver, global optimization problems with the multistart method, and 'arbitrary' Sheets models containing any numeric formulas with the Evolutionary Solver. With the Solver Add-on, created by Frontline Systems, developers of the Solver in Microsoft Excel (you can define and solve many types of optimization problems in Google Sheets, just as you can with the Excel Solver and with Frontline's Solver App for Excel Online.
